What do you get when nine animals squeeze into an elevator on their way to a birthday party? Raucous fodder for a children’s book. Phoenix author, librarian and mother Phoebe Fox wrote Up Up Up (Southwest Human Development, $12.99) after she was inspired by her children’s enjoyment riding the glass elevator in Phoenix’s Burton Barr Library. Her story stood out among more than 250 entries submitted to the First Edition Children’s Book contest hosted by local nonprofit Southwest Human Development, which benefits disadvantaged children. For every book sold, SHD will donate a copy to a child or family in need. Since its publication in 2016, more than 1,000 books have been donated.
